SHOOTING WITH A SMART PHONE GUIDE

This guide will run you through the process of filming amazing videos with your smartphone. Our Director/Editor, Roy Heisler, will walk you through tips on audio, lighting, setting up your camera, and other useful information to help you shoot high quality footage. We’ve intentionally kept it short, sharp and to the point so you can refer back to it whenever you’re filming. After you’ve gone through this guide a few times and seen just how quickly these tips improve your results, you’ll be shooting like a pro!

STEP #1

Prepare the content

  • Write down what you want to say. You can write it word for word, or just bullet point some notes about your topic. Try not to read directly from your document but you can reference them occasionally.
  • Speak clearly and be authentic!

STEP #2
Select a location for filming

  • Choose a location without too many distractions in the background, including noisy environments or places where other members of your household may be.

STEP #3
Camera Tips

  • If you’re filming by yourself, you may want to use the front facing camera so you can see yourself while shooting.
  • Clean the lens of your camera before filming.
  • Check your settings before you begin to make sure you are filming at the highest quality setting that your phone offers.
  • Before starting, make sure you have space on your phone. You may find that you need to delete photos or videos from your phone in order to free up space.
  • Lock down your exposure to allow for your camera to focus directly on your face.
  • Turn on Airplane Mode prior to filming to prevent notifications and phone calls to interrupt you.

STEP #4
Setting up your shot

  • Do not shoot your video while holding your camera. Set your camera to about the height of your eyes. If you don’t have a tripod, use books or other household items to prop up your phone.
  • Once you’ve set up your shot, don’t move your camera again until you’ve completed filming.

STEP #5
Lighting your shot

  • Make sure you shoot in an area that has enough light, but make sure the light is even. Not too dark and not too bright.
  • Do not shoot into the sun (with the sun behind you). You can shoot with the sun on your face.
  • If you’re shooting at night, make sure you have good lighting.

STEP #6

Audio

  • Try to film as close to the camera as you can, about a foot and a half. Make sure you have your entire head in the shot.
  • Do a test. Film yourself for a few seconds and then play it back. Make sure you don’t see or hear anything distracting in the background and that your in focus and you can hear your voice clearly.
  • Listen for noises as you shoot, if you hear something, stop and do it again.

STEP #7

Shoot the content

  • Make sure you are not looking at yourself on the screen while you shoot!! Look directly at the lens.
  • Start by saying your name. Spell your first and last name and give us your title. This won’t be in the final video, but helps us know who you are during the editing process.
  • If you mess up, just do it again. THERE ARE NO MISTAKES.

STEP #8
Deliver the files

  • You CAN deliver us more than one file. During the post-production process, we can edit together your clips.
  • Please don’t email your files to us as your email program will compress the file. If you have any questions at all, please feel free to contact us at info@definingentertainment.com.
  • Use this dropbox link to deliver the files.
